The Complicated, True Story Behind Wonder Woman — & Why We Need Her Now More Than Ever

“It’s refreshing to see a man play the love interest in a superhero movie, giving heartfelt speeches while his eyes glimmer with tears, and gazing in awe as Diana saves him from a hail of bullets. Anyone who finds this emasculating can go flush their head down a toilet, because Wonder Woman treats its love interest with more respect than most superhero franchises. Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) is a fully-developed character with his own enemies and allies (a rarity among his female counterparts), and his romance with Diana is more effective as a result.
Rather than being a roided-up carnage machine like DC’s usual male leads, he’s like a sweeter version of Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor: a spy who survives by violence and deception, rediscovering his sense of hope by following an outsider hero.” – REVIEW: Wonder Woman is the first truly great movie of the DC franchise
i feel basically the same. i cna’t believe i enjoyed it THIS MUCH and i am suddenly all feels. like 99% feels and 1% white wine
Yes yes yes! I absolutely adored Gal Gadot as Diana, the romance felt freaking real and wonderful with believable conflict and sincere growth and abundant affection, CP hit all the emotional notes and portrayed his character just big time rolling with Diana’s thing with such aplomb, the supporting characters were presented SO BEAUTIFULLY, and “Diana! Shield!” was like the first time I teared up and I just loved it, RC, I loved it so so much!
Wonder Woman and Star Trek Beyond are perpetuating the very necessary idea that if Chris Pine is in your movie you must somehow, someway give him a motorcycle to ride. Space motorcycle, future motorcycle, WWI motorcycle- if it has Chris Pine on it, it doesn’t matter.
petition for patty jenkins to direct the next star trek
My top three feminist exploitations of male-default language:
1. “Valar morghulis. All men must die.” “Yes, but we are not men.” – Daenerys, Game of Thrones
2. “No man can kill me!” “I am no man!!!!” – Eowyn, LotR: Return of the King
3. “God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs.” “Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.” – Dr. Ellie Sattler, Jurassic Park
4. “This is No Man’s Land, Diana. It means no man can cross it…” “But it’s what I’m going to do.” – Diana Prince (presumably because “I am no man” was taken)
If you were devastated by the end, here are some fix-its, with varying levels of angst and almost-crack:
