I don’t share personal things here often…that’s not what this blog is for.  But I thought I’d share a minor triumph.  I’ve lost 35 lbs since April.  I’m by no means small, but I feel healthier and I look better and my knees don’t hurt.  And I haven’t been on a diet so much as changed the way I eat (timing, pattern, types of food).  I’m rarely hungry (and never for long), I feel satisfied with my meals, and it’s been surprisingly easy.  By the time I turn 50, I’m hoping to be in a healthier place than I’ve been through most of my 40s.

I kept it a secret when I started, because I didn’t want my entire family watching if it didn’t go well.  But now people know (they can’t help but notice, actually), and I still have a ways to go, but I’m feeling surprisingly positive about the whole thing.  I’d planned to shoot for losing another 15 lbs, but I think now I’m more inclined to just eat this way the rest of my life, maybe allowing myself more exceptions once I’ve lost a bit more, and seeing where I naturally level out.

I was spurred by the fact that a colleague of mine retired in December, and then in March was hiking with his family, had a coronary on the trail, and died.  It was so fucking tragic.  My girls are finally old enough to backpack with.  I like being in the wilderness and teaching them the joys of being where there are no roads and spectacular views.  I’m healthy, other than the weight.  And I never wanted t risk doing that to them.

Anyway, not sure I’ll leave this here long, but in a sharing mood as I head out to date night with Geek Boy Professor.  I’m excited about planning our next high-country trip for next summer.

There’s so little of this chapter that I can share without completely spoiling it, but here’s a short out-of-context snippet.  From Cleaving, but referencing Bleary.

Chris took a deep breath.  “To get that feeling for Steve, that terror and exhilaration and sense of being almost sure you’re right and this kiss is welcome, but oh if you’re wrong it’s so, so bad.  To get all that, I was thinking of the first time I kissed you.  

“You were… man, you were just not hearing what I was trying to tell you, and I remember this moment, I could almost hear a voice in my head whispering ‘jump!’  So I did.  I leaned in like I’d wanted to a hundred times before, but had always not, and when our lips touched my stomach actually flipped like I was falling.   I poured everything I had into that kiss — everything that I didn’t seem to have words for… or maybe the words I had didn’t reach you.  And there was this horrible moment that lasted an eon when I was sure I’d made a terrible, terrible mistake.  And then, suddenly it wasn’t a mistake at all.  I wasn’t falling.  I was flying. And it was perfect.”

Jim has felt numb ever since he woke up (was brought back to life) from the Khan incident. Sure, he’s shown emotion, but it’s been three years since he’s had true, deep feeling. He’s forgotten what it’s even like, just going through the motions day in and day out.

And then he’s rattled, shaken to his core, as he stands at the comm console, holding tight because he realizes that if he lets go he’ll lose the Enterprise forever. He gives the order to abandon ship and the ship’s entire life flashes through his mind.

The Enterprise is one of the only things he has left from his life before Starfleet. They almost grew up together- he’d seen her from the day she started construction in Iowa, rode past her every day as she became a part of the town’s landscape, snuck into the ship’s shell more than a few nights for a quickie. Had looked up at her hull as he’d taken off into the shuttle the day he’d left for Starfleet. Had become her captain and gotten to know every inch of her more than anyone except maybe Scotty could. Had spent the happiest days of his life roaming her corridors.

And now she’s falling apart.

It isn’t until he’s staring down at her screaming, crashing saucer from the safety of his Kelvin pod that the Enterprise, the true love of his life, was the only thing in the universe capable of making him feel again.

Years of repressed emotions come rushing back at once, and he knows he has a job to do, a crew to save. But he feels alive. And he gives one last pained glance at the ship responsible for giving him all of that, sets his jaw, and gets to work.

this fandom is blessed with so many amazing authors, I’ll only list some works of my favourites and try to keep some variety, since I don’t know what you like. The list could easily be much longer, these are not even half of my ao3 bookmarks and I honestly rarely remember to bookmark at all. Things I’ve read on tumblr are lost in the mess of my Likes, so all the links are AO3. If you want a rec of something specific – AU, canon, thropes etc let me know and I’ll look around 🙂

HUMAN ERROR by thejabberwock / @00qficlets – E, WIP (8k+) – this miracle is for me so it goes without saying it’s amazing. Android/Artificial Intelligence!Bond, which is an interesting change to all the android!Q in the fandom and a personal fave thrope of mine. I think it’s safe to expect over 50k total so it’s sorta slowburn. Without spoilers I can promise both angst and fluff and amazing Vesper, not to mention Bond’s character development (and Q’s!) and talking about difficult issues ❤ On that note, check out MONSTERS VERSE because lbr the whole fandom would love to see Casino Royale with Q.

THE BODY ELECTRIC by 8611 / @deepspacebison – T, 3k+11k – the android!Q I mentioned above. It’s short but so well written, Q breaks your heart here.

BLUE-EYED MONSTER by Only_1_Truth – M, 118k -a fandom classic, rather loong but so very satisfying. I loved how Bond was Really Very Smart and connected with Q mostly because they kept each other on their toes. From this author I’m loving a current WIP ACES GREY (E, 39k+), because while I don’t care about BDSM, this fic has a very interesting ace!Bond, and Bond and Q’s conversations are amazingly full of hidden angst.

A MODERATE SELF-AWARENESS by JPlash – E, 9,5k- Spectre fix-it, with Bond “missing his job” so to speak, without bashing Madeleine, and with snarky Q who refuses to appear in Bond’s bed out of nowhere.

DAWN by kiyala – T, 18k – this is so lovely and I remember smiling so much while reading. Plus, there’s lots of really pretty art by @piecrmbs.

FEELS LIKE INSOMANIA (WOAH) by skylights / @frijae – T, 4k – Q works too much, has insomnia and deals with it any way he can think of. This is actually really good and I love their weird-domestic relationship here.

QURIOSITY by dr_girlfriend – E, 80k – this is very difficult to rec because all my favourite elements are spoilers about Q, but expect slowburn with Bond being a great friend when needed.

ORDINARY NUMBERS by BootsnBlossoms&Kryptaria / @bootsnblossoms @kryptaria – T, 44k – another fandom staple. Q is just another worker in MI6 Help Center, and it’s amazing to see him trying to hide his genius. Bond is surprised people at MI6 can actually be competent. From the same authors, worth checking out is RED QUEEN TO OVERWATCH (M, 86) where Q also is a genius but with much more flair. It’s a crossover with Sherlock (BBC) but knowledge of the series is not necessary to enjoy the fic.

THE SHEER LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM by scioscribe – G, 2k – this is the thing to read if you need a quick dose of fun and snark<3

SLOW DANCING IN A BURNING ROOM by feelslikefire / @feels-like-fire  – E, 66k – The Espionage Fic we love to see in this fandom. The author used the tag “Bond is a shady fuck” and honestly, what else could you need? Also, the sequel is a crossover with White Collar, which is another fave of mine ❤

THE BEST LAID PLANS by Lafayette1777 / @lafayette1777 – T, 22k – somewhat plot heavy, with lots of physical and mental health issues, great OCs and wonderful atmoshpere throughout the developing relationship.

NO GODS ARE PRESENT, NO WINGS NO HALOS by paxlux / @psychofink – M, 6k – okay, this is not your usual fic, Bond and Q are ah, darker than usual, which I can’t explain without ruining the story, but if you are in the mood for something different, this is really good.

MELOMANIE by dhampir72 / @dhampir72 – T, 40k – I could easily rec all the fics from this author and no one would be surprised, as dhampir72 has been my ficcrush for ages now lol. But this is the sort of broken Bond with mental issues that takes the cake, and I would recommend reading it to anyone regardless of their fandoms ❤ (and oh my god, please listen to the music while reading)

THE COURTSHIP OF MR. BOND by marlowe_tops / @marlowe_tops – E, 30k – Pride and Prejudice AU that works way better than it has any right to. Honestly, it’s wonderful, Bond and Q are perfect while time-accurate and I’m smiling just remembering it.

ARS(E) TECHNOLOGICA by beaubete / @beaubete – E, 16k – basically the best porn series out there. Even if you don’t like some thropes used, the writing is so good you will suddenly understand why people have these specific kinks. Other works by this author are top notch too, but this is where to go when in need of smut fix.
