Picspiration for Backspace… coming soon to a chapter near you…
I know – one of those hates with the cups built in and a straw wrapping down to your mouth. I can see you sitting there composing with your scotch hate on.
OMG I would write one nonsensical paragraph and pass out. No… like a finger of scotch and some dark chocolate. Sipping scotch. Not a guzzler hat. *shudders*
I can send protein bars and vitamins, if that will help.
Good scotch is more often a fic motivator…just saying 😀 Though your suggestions are probably better for longterm stamina… I’ll take it under advisement.
Oh – and what is yesterday’s AU disaster? I totally enjoyed that entire discussion. I’m hoping you go through with it – I wanna see Chris and Zach in those positions. It sounds gloriously fun to me.
Oh, I have every intention of going through with it… and it WAS funny, even to me, amidst all my swearing. It’s only a disaster in that it means Home is likely waylaid again. As well as the 00q I’m 5k into. There’s only so much of me, Punk and Ducky to go around…
here are, I’m sure I wouldn’t feel so driven to change things.
Eh, I think it’s not so much that as that we’re just moving onto the next thing. Everyone can always improve. That’s the nature of the thing.

sentence, just because it never crossed my mind originally to write it that way. I didn’t know if this is something that pertains truly only to me and what I do, or other authors do that too. I often think that so many of you pretty much have everything just like you want it before you post it, and I sometimes post just to get it off my hands and into a saved condition. Sometimes the more I proof/edit, the more sick I get of it! ha
Oh, I feel that. I put something down I was sick of a few years back and STILL haven’t picked it up…and after yesterday’s AU disaster, I suspect it will be a while before I do. I think it’s very easy to get sick of your work, and very easy to overwork it. Often between the time that I write something and the time I post it, I have gotten to the point that I have no idea whether it’s crap. I just have to take Punk and Ducky’s word for it that I should post as opposed to not. I honestly can’t tell anymore.
I’m sure I have stories that would be improved by my going through and editing/reworking them after they’ve posted, but this is my hobby, and that sounds like a hell of a lot of work. Maybe when I’ve retired and start trying to write ofic I’ll be that detailed, but not for this. It’s meant to be fun… don’t let your doubts about your work get in the way of that. That said, there are no rules about changing things after you post. So if that makes it more interesting for you, have at it. They’re your stories… do with them as you will!
When you write and post, do you ever someday go back and reread a fic or a chapter? And if/when you do, do you ever change things – like a word, a sentence, that kind of thing? Or do you always do all that preliminary work before you ever post, and then when you post, as far as you’re concerned, it’s completely finished?
I occasionally go back and read something old I’ve written, at least in part, especially if I get a comment from the middle of an old story and I have no memory of what part the reader is commenting on. It’s usually some terrible mixture of glee and dread as I read… a combination of liking an odd sentence, wishing I’d gotten over some specific writing foible earlier, and realizing that if anything my writing has grown less complex over time and I really haven’t grown much at all. If I see an actual typo, I’ll fix it, though god knows I and several betas have generally gone through a chapter several times before I post and I TRY to make it perfect before sending it out in the world, I’m ALWAYS AMAZED at what slips through anyway… in the desire to get things out to readers, we are often all too close to it to see mistakes I might have introduced responding to some other comment. I rarely make stylistic changes as I reread, even if my style has changed. I figure that’s just documentation of my journey so to speak.
So if you’re reading through old things and see a typo or some simple continuity issue (I said something was three days ago, but really it should have been four), go ahead and let me know in a DM (not a comment please) and I’ll be happy to take care of it. If you notice major plot holes or inconsistencies… you can tell me via DM, but I’m probably not going to change anything. I’m done with that story, and someone might love it the way it is, and I wouldn‘t want to pull the rug from under them.
6, for Princess Diaries and Me!
Which scenes did you cut, and which were added in [title]?
Oh man. I was agonizing over a speech I was going to make Zach give in (I think) Chapter 10, before I realized I could just jettison that shit, since it wasn’t saying anything important anyway. I am not a speechwriter, lol.
I also cut a bunch of future-y stuff from the last chapter, in large part because I might eventually get around to making it into little add-on ficlets.
I did purposely add the last bit with Anton to give him and Zach a bit more of a good professional and personal relationship and a good send off. I don’t think I would have before Anton passed away while I was in the middle of writing this one, but it was needed. 😦

‘Fred the labrador takes nine ducklings ‘under his paw’
A labrador has become an unlikely foster parent to nine ducklings.
They were found waddling around the grounds of Mountfitchet Castle in Stansted, Essex, with their mother nowhere to be seen.
Staff took them inside as they were too young to fend for themselves.
Since then, Fred, the 10-year-old labrador, has been keeping a close eye on them.’
