I call upon the fan fic writing gods to bless you with the perseverance to finish one of your unfinished drafts.
May your fingers dance along the letters upon your device with ease, may the devil of distraction stay far from you, and may your work not need much editing.
I pass this blessing upon every fan fic writer out there.
lol my pile of AUs is far too high already. But its interesting, i am opposite in that I get pretty bored with real world scenarios really quickly, which is why I usually take a hard right into AUs. I have in every rpf fandom I’ve written in so far.
And I am grateful for it! It would be so boring if we all did the same thing. I think I might be dipping my toe in the AU pool now since I keep having flashes of scenes when I should be 1) working or 2) finishing Backspace. That’s usually a sign something won’t go away unless I write it down.
Well, I’m not going to say “no”, but I’m having a hard time imagining what form that would take. I rarely even read AUs. If you have to say “Zach is a *** and Chris is a ***” I’m generally less interested. The notable exception is just about anything by @suedescripture and a few older fics (e.g., “wand of light” tickles me for some reason).
That said, I am writing a sort of AU for another fandom, in which the characters are basically as they appear/act/are employed in canon, but there’s something additional happening with one of them. But I don’t really feel that sort of pull with Pinto. I tend to meet them more or less where I think they are now and send them off in new directions. So I could perhaps write something where one of them has some sort of crisis that stops them from acting and go from there… but I’m not sure that counts as an AU per se… more than anything else where we’re mashing their faces together, anyway.
I’m not sure if it’s lack of imagination on my part, or just still not being done telling these stories about two actors/friends. On the other hand, I do follow my muse, so if there were a plot bunny that ambushed me in the middle of the night involving some AU, I’d definitely follow it down whatever rabbit hole it led through. And now you’ve got me wondering what might spark that. I’ve been thinking about it, and nothing really comes to mind, but I’m not against the idea…I just don’t think my muse works that way.
So I won’t say never, but it doesn’t seem terribly likely based on the sorts of stories that get lodged in my brain and require exorcism via writing. Feel free to make suggestions, though… maybe something will stick.
That’s why I phrased the question how I did. You seem open
to, like, canon divergent AUs (whoops! Zach has a baby) where the boys are still generally as we see them, it’s just that their lives
took an unexpected turn.
Right now Pinto is my only normal fandom–everybody else is either in space or magic school–so while I love AUs, I like my Pinto AUs to be in our world, like maybe one of them’s an interior decorator, or they’re both high school teachers or whatever, because the thing I’m most interested in is their relationship. I mean, I would totally read them in space! I just prefer them to be on our planet. So I am cool with all the actors & friends stories you want to write. I never get tired of them.
Dammit, Punk! You say “one of them’s an interior decorator” and suddenly I’m envisioning an AU where HGTV basically forces two floundering “stars” of the network to co-host a show together, Zach serving as the big city designer and Chris the hunky renovator who comes up with great ideas on the fly that substantially improve the design (not that Zach can admit it at first). And they HAAAAATE each other to start with, but then the show’s successful and they have this natural chemistry…and somewhere in there, a dream home gets made IDEK what I’m talking about *shakes fist at beta*.
I’m laughing like a Disney villain right now.
Because of course Pie’s wearing a tool belt, and he decides he’s going to build a table for the dining room, but Zach says it won’t be right for the space. They argue. Chris pretends to let it go. Zach flounces off to Home Depot to look at drawer pulls, and Chris builds the table anyway, right there in the driveway, and he has to take his shirt off because it’s hot outside, yo, and Zach returns in the van, sees Chris working topless, and nearly drives onto the lawn, but when Zach sees what Chris is making, he abandons the van halfway on the sidewalk with the engine still running and storms over to confront him and we deserve this AU, ato, we deserve it.
Woodplay as foreplay
GDI RC! You’re not helping! Also, that was glorious.
Whelp, guess I’ll be writing my first true AU, now that I have a title and everything. *headdesk*
