Snippet not on Sunday or Wednesday

From Cleaving.  I got about 500 words written this weekend, and did some more research…I’ll be taking some creative license as I blend actual events with the story…oh well.

“Daddy!”

Zach looked up from the script he was marking to see Chris approaching, carrying Nathan, who was squiggling like a fish to get down.

“Well if it isn’t my two favorite boys!” Zach said, nodding to Tobias, the assistant director who had given him the shoot sequence for next week.

Tobias closed his script and retreated, saying,  “Have a good weekend, Zach,” just as Nathan plowed into his legs.

“Hey Little Man,” Zach said, bending down to scoop Nathan up.  “How long have you guys been here?  We ran a little late.”

“Not long,” Chris said, placing a hand on Zach’s waist and giving him a quick kiss.  “But we caught the last scene.  It’s looking good.  I didn’t think you were filming the argument until next week.”

“We’re ahead of schedule.  My scenes really clicked today,” he said, grinning at Chris because it felt so good to be acting again…and Chris seemed happy being a stay-at-home dad between his own projects. “Things are going smoothly and the argument uses the same set we were already on.  By knocking it out today, we’re able to move to Sound Stage 2 next week.  In fact, I’m getting Monday off because they’re shooting Rhys’ scenes first.  So I get a long weekend.”

“Daddy sad?” Nathan asked.

“No, Little Man.  My character was upset, but I’m happy.  I was just pretending for the camera.”

“Nat’an shhh,” Nathan said, putting his finger over his lips.

Zach grinned and put his arm around Chris.  “Did you have to be quiet in the sound stage?” he asked Nathan, starting toward his dressing room.

“Nat’an good.  No talking.”

“You’re a pro,” Zach agreed.  “I’ll just get out of my costume and makeup, and then we can head out.  Did you guys pick out a movie for tonight?  Is the pizza dough made for Nathan’s Home Pizzaria? You didn’t get dough on the ceiling again, did you?” he asked, nuzzling Nathan’s neck and making him giggle.

“No pizza,” Nathan squealed, squirming away and hiding his neck.

“No pizza?  Change of plans?” he asked, turning back toward Chris.

“Yeah.  Well, maybe,” he said, motioning to Zach’s dressing room.

Zach was immediately alert.  If Chris wanted privacy for this conversation…

Once the door was closed behind them, he asked,  “What’s up?” setting Nathan down so he could scamper over to the pile of children’s books on the small sofa in the corner of the room.

Chris rubbed the back of his neck.  “Well, if you’re up for it — not too tired — we should head over to Children’s Hospital.”

“Children’s Hos… what happened?  Is Luca okay?”

“Fine.  Everyone’s fine.  Well, not everyone, but I shouldn’t have led with that.”  He took a deep breath and pulled out his phone.   “I got a call this afternoon.  From the County.”

Oh.  Oh.

Yes! I’m Soupnazi LOL

*headdesk* I’m such a dork. And now I swear we’ve had this conversation before

Hey! I have a question… doesn’t it it sound like “wake up with him” in Honey Moon instead of “wake up with you”? Also, does he know you referenced his song for your fic?!

NO!  And you can never tell him!  My RL does not know what I write, except for Geek Boy Professor, because I promised to share everything with him in front of the universe and a bunch of friends and family.  David can’t know.  And actually, he would probably take down that youtube if he saw it… He’s very sensitive about people streaming entire songs for free, and I totally understand it considering how he struggles financially and songs are only a buck.  But I figure I own all of his stuff, and I’m basically sort of advertising what a talent he is, so I can justify linking one song to my story.

Regarding the lyrics, I agree that line sounds off.  I always heard it as “Honey Moon wake up right here” but that’s not what was listed on the site, so…

I like “with him.”  Works in my story.  David is definitely straight, though, so unlikely that he would sing that.

I just wanted to say again how beautiful “Cleaving” was. The ending was so perfect. And I’ve been playing “Honey Moon” on repeat and just so content.

Wait, are you Soupnazi21 on AO3 (I’m so hopelessly bad at keeping track of people’s IDs on different sites), or have I actually turned TWO people onto that song?

Either way, thank you so much.  I was playing it on repeat as I wrote much of this chapter, trying to capture the feeling of that song in my writing, and make sure we had completely overwritten the jealousy and angst of the beginning chapters of the story.  I’m so glad you liked the story, AND the song.  I’m sort of thrilled some new people might actually appreciate David Poe, now.  If you want to explore, some of my other favorites by him are “Reunion” (hysterical and a bit dark if you listen for it), “Apartment”, “Love is Red”, “Not Enough Night”, “Blue Glass Falls” (angry break up song), “Doxology”, and “These are the Days” and that’s just off the top of my head…

Oh, and a funny story about “Honey Moon.”  I’m on David’s mailing list, and got a signed copy of the album before it was released.  And he and I have met and occasionally email each other about where he’s touring, etc… he’s actually written me about advice on cover artwork before, just surveying a few fans.  Anyway, I was so excited to hear his new album “God and the Girl” that I just immediately put it in my computer to get it loaded into iTunes.  And I started playing before it had finished ripping.  So Honey Moon started playing (because it’s first on the album), but then instead of playing the next song on God and the Girl, my computer just picks another random David Poe song from the (extensive)  library, and it chose “The Settlement”, which is about a divorce.

I thought this was hysterical (obviously), and wrote to David to tell him what happened, and that it felt like he’d written this very abbreviated, REALLY sad story.  He wrote back  tickled, saying even HE would write something that sad, and then apparently told a bunch of his friends.  He hadn’t ever considered pairing those songs but acknowledged that the effect was pretty devastating.

He’s enormously talented and pretty much broke, so please buy his music if you like it.

“May we all live as long as we like, may we all be as strong as the wine”

And thanks so much about your comments on Cleaving.  I just had someone ask me for the address, I think because you’ve been reblogging my teasers.

Last night I started doing the research I needed for the epilogue… so I’m trying to keep the momentum up…

When you’re trying to finish writing something and you can’t remember the name of an original character you briefly introduced two chapters ago and have to research your own damned story to maintain continuity…
