Some of y’all don’t want fandom to be fun at all you want it to be like some kind of gd AP Lit class where all we do is have pointed debates over the most Correct interpretation of media like NO get fucked I will project onto my favorite character and write whatever shitty nonsense fic for whatever illogical pairing I want die mad about it

Fandom is such a weird place. Like I watched a tv show and thought “wow, these two nerds have a lot of chemistry and I’d like to dedicate a large chunk of my life to thinking about them” so I went in search of other people who also thought these two nerds had a lot of chemistry and then it turned out that a shit ton of people were talking about these two nerds having a lot of chemistry and now it’s 4 years later and we write each other porn on holidays.

Hey

Did you know you can subscribe to fics you like on AO3? All you have to do is log into your AO3 account, go to the top of that fic, and click the Subscribe button, and you’ll get an email whenever that fic gets a new chapter added!

In fact, did you know you can even subscribe to your favorite AO3 authors? Just go to the top of their main AO3 dashboard, and click the Subscribe button there. You’ll get emailed whenever your fave posts anything new!

This is one of my favorite features on AO3.  It’s fantastic. 😀

this gets funnier every year

The year is 2042. Your daughter is awkwardly silent as she eats her dinner. “Something wrong sweetie?” She sighs and puts down her fork. “I was digging really deep in AO3 last night…Why didn’t you finish that coffee shop au?” It happened. Your past has come back to haunt you. Nay, it never truly left.

U CANNOT OUTRUN UR CRIME

OKAY BUT WAIT. This has happened to me. Recently. Because I am old and I have things out there from previous fandoms with previous pseuds and one day my teenager begins a rant at me about people never finishing any WIPs on the pit of voles (which he does not call the pit of voles because he has No Knowledge of such a thing but yet he still reads on which I didn’t think anyone did any longer) and he points out an example to me of something I WROTE AND LEFT WIPing for ages and he has NO IDEA #1 that his mom wrote this and #2 How much it still haunts me to this day that it will. sit. there. for. eternity. because I am too lazy to pull it down.

oh my god

#why didn’t you finish cleaning your room?#IDK MOM WHY DIDN’T YOU FINISH THE RON/DRACO MERMAID AU?

( @mrv3000 )

That last one hits close tho

Hi, readers!

*hops up on soapbox to shout into the void*

As a fanfiction reader, you may have noticed AO3 is running a banner at the top of the site this week for its fundraiser. The fundraiser isn’t just an opportunity to support the archive. For a single, $10 donation, “you may choose to become an OTW member. Members have the right to vote in organizational elections. Membership lasts for one year from the date of the most recent qualifying donation. If you are already a member, donating US$10 or more today will extend your membership to one year from today. By choosing to become a member you are agreeing to receive emails about OTW elections and a ballot.“

It’s really fucking hard to run even a small fansite for a few hundred members. I’ve done it. It’s thankless, miserable work and you often end up shelling out hundreds of dollars of your own money to keep those small sites running, then lose all your hard work when the site is inevitably forced to closed because four admins can’t afford to keep it running for those few  hundred members. The Archive is MASSIVE comparatively. I can only imagine what a beast it is to run. If you can spare the $10, you’ll be getting your money’s worth for the year, I assure you.

Did you know the Archive of Transformative Works does more than just host your favorite fanworks? The Archive is involved in lots of projects! Projects include Fanlore, Legal Advocacy, and a peer-reviewed academic journal, Transformative Works and Cultures, as well as Open Doors, which imports at-risk fanwork archives to AO3 so you can keep accessing fanworks that might otherwise be lost.

Go through your old coats and dig up some quarters, then consider using it to become a member of the Archive because Tumblr could be bought out any time, but the fans run the Archive.

*hops off soapbox*

Thank you so much for this wonderful post! It’s so nice to see people loving on the OTW and AO3.

But, seriously, folks like you who run fansites with a few friends and limited resources are heroes, and the Archive of Our Own wouldn’t exist without you. Dedicated fans prove that we can build a home for what we love, and the founding of the Organization for Transformative Works was possible because of that spirit of passion and hard work.

Which is just one of the reasons why we’re committed to preserving at-risk archives. Our Open Doors team partners with site administrators to import fanworks to AO3 so that they won’t be lost if the original site shuts down. We believe that fannish history and culture is important, and it’s our mission to protect and promote it.

So thank you again for your kind words and for encouraging people to donate. We appreciate every bit of support we get. ♥

AO3 gives so much and asks so little.  Those of us who can need to support it whenever they ask.

Still cheaper than any of the “regular” addictions…

To celebrate the Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day on August 21st, and following this post, here’s what you can do to show your favorite fanfiction writers how grateful you are for their work!

Whether you are just a reader or a writer as well, on August 21st:

  • Go on AO3, FF.net, Wattpad or any other fanfiction website, even Tumblr, and leave comments on your favorite fics. It doesn’t matter if you’ve already reviewed them, just do it again. It doesn’t even have to be a long comment, just show your appreciation. Tell the writers how much you love their fics. Let them know what they mean to you.
  • Since you’re there, give kudos, favorite their fics, vote, like them.
  • Send your favorite writers an encouraging message. Tell them how much you love their work. Tell them which of their fics is your favorite and why. Tell them why they’re important to you.
  • Make a post recommending some of your favorite fics to your followers so that they have a chance to read them as well and share them with others. Spread the word.

Make this a very special day for your favorite writers, but remember to nurture them often. They spend countless hours working on plots, developing characters and creating worlds that wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for them. And they do it for free, of their own accord and frequently during their free time. It takes hard work and commitment and love for what they’re doing. And they do it for them just as much as they do it for you, so appreciate it.

They give you infinite ways in which your favorite characters find love, go on adventures and get to experience different lives, new challenges. They give you unimaginable versions of your favorite stories that you’ll just never get to see in the official storyline. They give you the opportunity to fall in love with your favorite characters all over again. Be grateful for that and don’t be afraid to express it.

Show your favorite writers how much you appreciate them and you might just make their day. And a writer who knows that their work is loved is a happy writer. Never forget that. Always share your love 🙂

Fair Warning

For those of you who follow me for Pinto/Spirk, you might notice an uptick in 00q posts from me, as I’ve started following more of those blogs (just as the fandom is shutting down, as is my MO).  I will try to remember to tag these so you can block if you want, but I’m hoping that since I tolerate a certain amount of SPN, Hamilton, Band of Brothers, and Xfiles posts, none of which I’ve seen, we can all live and let live and enjoy each other’s joy in fandom, even when it’s not our own.
