I hate that I’m feeling depressed after discovering two of my favorite fics have been deleted.

Oh no!  Which ones?  And that IS sad… you’re right to be sad about it.

Gourmandises and its sequel Sucreries.  I tried googling both to see if they were anywhere else but no such luck.  😦

I don’t know them.  What fandom are they for?

Nevermind…just read your tags.  So sad to lose good spirk…

They’re spirk fanfics.  I know that it is a part of life in the fandom that there are authors who will delete their fics, but I still can’t feeling disappointed.

The nice thing about posting on AO3 is that you can abandon fics when you’re ready to leave.  They remain, unattached to your profile.  I intend to do that if I ever leave pinto.

That’s good to hear.  I enjoy reading your fics.

I don’t want to come across as criticizing the author for deleting her fics.  It is her right to do whatever she wants to do since they are her stories.  It doesn’t change the fact that I’m still sad that they are no longer in existence.

Aw, that’s sweet.  Thank you!  I wasn’t fishing, tho.  I just realized after trying to help you look that those seemed to have been on LJ, and I think with that platform if you delete your profile, everything goes with it.  It’s nice that AO3 has a solution for that.

there comes a moment in every girl’s life when she says to herself

i read some fucking weird fanfiction

the fact that I don’t know if this is ‘read’ or ‘read’ presents two very different thoughts here

one of past regret and one of ongoing concern

Why not both?  Both seem relevant to me

Fanfic and O-fic

From an interview with CS Pacat (aka SU Pacat), the author of Captive Prince (bonus: the interviewer is the infamous Aja Romano).

I wrote fanfiction for years, from the age of about 15. I don’t place one above the other, but my experience is that original fiction is much more…

And this is also why it so often doesn’t work when a story starts as
fanfic, and then the author changes the names and tries to publish as
o-fic.  All of that groundwork and investment that your fanfic audience
understood because the characters were named, say, Bella and Edward,
your new audience doesn’t have.  You have to actually DO THE WORK to
make the new audience care.  And certain character traits (ridiculous
possessiveness and creepy obsession, for example) that were somewhat
understandable when the character was a different SPECIES don’t usually
translate well in a plain old human.

O-fic is usually best when it
starts from scratch. Otherwise a lot of extra work needs to happen to
make the story whole.  I LOVE fanfic.  I love having that groundwork
done so I can play in just one corner of the sandbox and explore some
detail rather than create the whole thing.  And I love o-fic… learning
about all new sandboxes.  But they are different, and I have so much respect for the people who can do both well.
