him. Meanwhile, Sherlock is fuming.

This is the BEST line because it was so weird and unnecessary to identify random CIA henchmen #2 by name
And none of the other CIA dudes ever got named in the dialogue despite being in multiple scenes and, you know, actually having lines
And so for no reason and contrary to all sensible CIA discretion we have an “Archer” instructed to shoot John in this incredibly romance-based episode
An episode where, PS, we’ve already seen background imagery of cupid pointing an arrow in John’s direction
And it’s even better because Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a poem about Cupid that was calledThe Blind Archer
And the best part is, look at the verses
One whole verse is about cupid the archer shooting a veteran who is a drinker and who CANNOT BELIEVE he’s being shot, it “cannot be right, it’s ludicrous quite” for him to fall in love like this
And then another whole verse is about Cupid shooting this isolated young guy who’s planning a celibate vow, despite the fact that he shouldn’t fall in love because “He has duties to do”
And I just really, really love this throw-away line
remember the statue of eros from the pilot aswell? interesting…
Okay but a near-kiss in S4. There’s no canon romance yet, but the situation with Mary is at a fever pitch and the world is basically falling apart around them, and it’s possible they both won’t make it, or there’s a moment where they both think that, in the midst of all this chaos, and John says very quietly, “Sherlock, I -” and reaches up so tentatively, because they don’t touch each other this way, and slides just his thumb along the edge of Sherlock’s jaw, and Sherlock swallows and blinks and swallows and blinks and can’t speak for a minute and their eyes are locked together as their faces get closer and closer and John’s eyes drop to Sherlock’s mouth, now his whole hand cupping the side of Sherlock’s face, and Sherlock whispers this small little “John?” and their noses bump, their eyes flutter shut, and *just* before their lips meet, they get interrupted, and break apart like they’re on fire and then they have to spend the rest of the series dealing with shit and never get to revisit that moment until like late s5…think of the glorious tension…
