Yeah, exactly. I saw in one of the reviews a person writing that ‘Pine was surprisingly good’. Well, for us that’s not surprising at all 😀

Yes, though I think that it’s easy to overlook the more subtle parts of his performance in the Trek films if you only see them once each and are overwhelmed with the spectacle.  So I’m glad he’s taking these character drama roles where his subtlety really shines.  I hope he never stops punching and riding motorbikes and blowing shit up and having quipped one-liners (let’s never do that again), but I’m glad his roles are more diverse now, and his audience will broaden.  This was not as arty a film as Z, in my mind, less Disney than Hours and his other Disney films.  It has the potential to really broaden his fanbase t folks who don’t like genre films.  I’m glad for him.

Yeah, I saw it yesterday too and absolutely loved it.

SUCH a great performance… made me feel a bit like one of my favorite films, Shawshank Redemption, tho that one has less ambiguity.  But in both cases the performances are rather understated and the struggle of the characters is often subtle and in their expressions.  I might need to own it…

It was interesting seeing STB Thursday and HoHW yesterday.  Pine is such a versatile actor, and it’s really starting to show.  I loved them each in different ways, but it was very clear that Toby is NOT Captain Kirk in a cowboy hat, you know?  Despite having just seen STB, I never once saw Kirk, and that is not always something I can say when I know an actor from one role and then see him in something else.  I also had that feeling in Finest Hours, but for some reason it really struck me with this one.  He’s very good, and people are starting to notice.

Thanks for the ask, ato! I’ll list four, because I took down those I liked less.

1.

My Husband, Attend

(aka Traditional Vulcan Wedding) – Kirk/Spock TOS, post-TMP, Explicit (9,890 words, WIP)

The encounter with V’ger gave Spock the answer the Masters of Gol could not. He seems content. It’s difficult to tell, so Jim has resigned himself to keeping distance. But then Spock proposes, which entails going to Vulcan, learning vows in Vulcan, wearing Vulcan robes – the whole nine yards.

2. The Sufficient Cause

Kirk/Spock AOS, post-STID, Explicit (28,342 words, complete)

Soon after returning to the post of First Officer, Spock realized why his older counterpart had prompted him to stay on the Enterprise. However, in the course of service it also became clear to him that friendship with the captain would impair their efficiency as a command team. Nearly losing Jim to Khan’s rampage a year later makes Spock reconsider.

3. A Good Traveler Has No Fixed Plans

Kirk/Spock AOS, pole dancer!Spock, AU, Mature (1,322 words, complete)

What do you do if you find your soulmate in a slave dancer from some dingy club? Take him on a merry ride across the galaxy, of course!

4.

Chekov, Pavel Andreievich

Non-fiction, meta. I wrote this kind of a guide for people to make Chekov more authentic in their works. Common misconceptions about the Russian culture I came across in various fics, etc. (1,339 words, complete)

Things about Pavel Chekov that seem funny and adorable to a person from Russia.

really enjoying that it’s discovering something new not only for Chris,
but for Zach also, who is more knowledgeable. Getting to know better
your partner and yourself as well. That’s awesome.

Aw, thank you!!  Yeah, Zach is really only more knowledgeable because he’s researched it more, but there’s a difference (obviously) between reading and doing.  And some of what Zach read might be a little hard to implement on the first try.  Chris is actually further along in accepting and integrating this into his view of himself.  Luckily Zach has him as a level-headed guide.

This “figuring it out together” was part of the appeal of writing this one.  I liked the idea of them both fumbling a bit.  I’m glad you’re enjoying that discovery too.

Yes, it’s the difference between fantasizing about something and actually doing it.  And actually owning your reactions to it, even when they don’t fit into your ideas of yourself.  And maybe Doms need aftercare, too.  Luckily, Chris isn’t one to let him stew in his own head…

Yeah.  😦  Babies!  In truth, I think Zach spent so long planning that encounter that he’s pretty thrown that it didn’t all go exactly as planned.  And he’s surprised and a little disturbed by his own reactions.  And that combination, of not being as in control as he thought and having such a strong reaction to it…that’s a little scary.
