Have you ever noticed that the ‘How Zach and Chris met’ story has changed many times over the years? Well, J and I decided to compile the various “origin stories”, as we’re calling them, for… science… reasons.
Origin Story #1: The Gym
Version A
As it happens, Quinto and Pine knew each other before being cast in the 11th Trek installment – in Los Angeles they both worked out at the same gym.
“Every time I’d see him I’d be ‘f**king schmuck’,” laughs Pine.
Quinto immediately interjects: “It wasn’t even a gym, it was a friend’s kitchen. That was the funny thing, we had the same trainer who was a friend of ours before he was either of our trainers, and now we work out at the same gym. At the time he worked us out of his kitchen.”
(2009)
Version B
Zach: Chris and I have a lot of mutual friends in LA, we live in the same neighbourhood, and it is true that we — as Hollywood as it sounds — have the same personal trainer who was, incidentally a friend of both of ours before he was our personal trainer. So, it’s not that Hollywood.
Chris: We also tan at the same place, we bleach our teeth at the same time.
Zach: That’s true too.
Chris: It’s just one of those regular day things.
Zach: But we have different chakra aligners, healers.
Chris: Do you— Did you switch? You don’t use Sandra anymore?
(2009)
Version C
Zach: We already kind of knew each other beforehand. We lived in the same neighbourhood in LA. And we have very, sort of, similar circle of friends. We actually had the same personal trainer before either of us got this job, so we would like pass as we were leaving the, uh—
Chris: Don’t tell him that.
Zach: —Workout. We were both friends with our trainer before he was our trainer.
Chris: We actually worked out in—
In unison: –his kitchen.

Origin Story #2: At A Party
Version A
Chris: So Zach, tell me, how did we meet?
Zach: We met at a party, didn’t we?
Chris: We did.
Zach: We met at a party—
Chris: Yep.
Zach: —for the ‘Declare Yourself’?
Chris: Vote. Yes we did.
Zach: This was about 3 days or so before you went in for your audition, after I had been well cast.
(2009)
Version B
Over the years, Pine and Quinto’s off-screen friendship has helped them establish an on-screen rapport — the two met before they were cast in “Star Trek,” at an event writer-producer Norman Lear organized to showcase his copy of the Declaration of Independence.
“I remember feeling, as I got to know Chris more, so impressed by his intelligence, which isn’t always the case with such a traditional leading man,” Quinto said. “I remember being pleasantly, not surprised, but …”
“You thought I was just a dumb blond,” Pine interrupted. “Actually, I have many more Spockian qualities than I do Kirkian qualities. We were two peas in a pod,” he said of Quinto, “in that we think about things way more than we should. We analyze.”
(2013)
Origin Story #3: Mutual Friends
Version A
“Yeah, we have a lot of mutual friends actually, so we met one another a few months before either of us got the roles in the film. Just sort of coincidentally.”
(2013)
Version B
“We actually have a lot of mutual friends. We have circle of friends that overlap, so we kind of knew each other before the movie a little bit. We met before we started shooting.”
(2013)
Origin Story #4: The Grimy
Version A
Interviewer: I heard you guys knew each other before?
Zach: Yeah, from The Grimy.
(2009)
Version B
Scott’s staging marks the first official production by the Grimy Corp, named
after an old apartment and creative hang-out once shared by artistic
friends Patrick J. Adams, Peerzada, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and
Scott.
(2012)
Origin Unspecified
“We’re really good friends. We knew each other before we got cast and it’s great to work with someone I respect a lot, whom I am really comfortable with.”
