Fanwork: Ulysses, by girlbookwrm

Rating: T for Teen

Word count: 89,065

Summary:  “Paperwork for the new head of Q-Branch,” Tanner said.

“Of course.” The words were like glass in his throat. Smoke inhalation was a bitch. His brain felt slow and foggy, like it was full of smoke too. “Whom shall I take them to?”

M lifted one white brow. “They’re for you, Quartermaster.”

Bond and Q are drawn together by names, work, and a certain Aston Martin. In which Q is kidnapped once, Bond is poisoned twice, and Eve is a badass on at least three occasions. AKA that time I tripped and wrote 80,000 words of 00Q.

Why it’s awesome:  What I love about it:  It’s so smart. Characterizations are fantastic.  It starts with some missing scenes in the timeline of the films we know, but never retells things we should know from canon (i.e., doesn’t bore us), just fills in things that make this universe special.  Then it picks up in earnest after Spectre.  The dialogue is sharp and witty and crisp, Q is tough and adorable and Bond is reluctantly soul searching when he’s not in total denial of his feelings or dealing with crushing pain.  Moneypenny characterizes Bond as, “With him, it’s either no feelings, or all the feelings.”  It’s an apt description.

It’s slow burn with lots of action, great character arcs, and twists that will have you screaming “NOOOOO!” at your computer/phone.  It’s a WIP with two chapters left, but the author updates about weekly, so you won’t be in suspense for long.  I can’t wait to read the rest. Mod note: Ato messaged us to say that this fic is now COMPLETE!

Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day, August 21st

ato-the-bean:

To celebrate the Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day on August 21st, and following this post, here’s what you can do to show your favorite fanfiction writers how grateful you are for their work!

Okay, so here’s my rec for today.  It’s a 00q WIP and it’s FABULOUS.

*goes to bed for five years*

Look, guys, I know this might sound hella greedy but when ya see art you like, you always reblog it. If ya gonna like it, reblog it (even after your post limit, reblog it when it’s done). Likes aren’t gonna do shit because not everyone is gonna go through your likes and notice a piece of artwork. Artists won’t get noticed if their art is just liked up and never actually shared amongst followers.

Always reblog artwork you like

Please, if you like it, reblog it. No one sees your likes. When you get a note that someone liked an art piece you almost think, man they liked it, but not enough to let other people see it.

the same goes with cosplay, writing, or anything that people create

Everyone who Art’s needs to have this, or something akin to this on there blog.

blease

I… did not know this. Whoops, I’m a monster. 😦

i gotta do this more often

WIP 7 Sentences Meme

ato-the-bean:

I was tagged DAYS AGO by @mikasoze…sorry for taking so long, I just haven’t been online much.  I had to cheat on the rules a bit, since page 7 of my WIP has already been published, and there isn’t a page 7 yet of the current chapter… but here are 7 lines…

His stocking had a Mr. Spock Pez dispenser (Leonard’s Spock, not his…he supposed that’s when they’d really know they’d made the big time), and Chris had a Kirk.  His mom had Uhura and Bones.  But the best stocking stuffer was possibly the socks he’d slipped into Chris’ stocking as a last minute thing, tan with a black “Fuck Socks” on the ankle.  Chris threw his head back in laughter, eyes crinkling delightfully.  When Nathan asked what was funny, Chris explained that his socks had writing.

“What say?”

“Um,” Chris started, clearing his throat and schooling his features. “‘I don’t like socks’.”

I looked up the inspiration and realize I need to edit the colors…

End of the Year Fic Roundup

ato-the-bean:

Following in the footsteps of @semper-ama and others. My fics that were finished in 2015 (though some were started in 2014).

LIST OF FICS:

My Pinto fics:

And a Spirk fic:

AO3 says these fics total 131,614 words, though I know I started Bleary in 2014, and I’m not sure how much that accounts for.   Still, pretty good considering the demands of real life.

Not sure if I’ll be as productive in the new year.  My latest attempt at writing seems a bit of a disaster, and I’m not getting as much enjoyment from it as I have in the past.  But maybe my muse has just gone on a brief sabbatical.  One can hope.

Thanks to all of you who encouraged me and commented on the fics.  It really is so motivating and enjoyable to feel there’s a back-and-forth.

I wish you all a happy new year.

those ao3 “kudos” emails where someone has gone through and read pretty much all of your stories, one after the other: blessings upon you and your household

don’t authors find that weird though? i don’t do that, just because i always figured it might seem stalkery, going story by story through people’s older work (which of course i do ~all the time~ because awesome fic is addictive)

if people are happy to have the kudos, i will totally start leaving them as i read

I mean, I can only speak for myself here, but no, I don’t find it creepy. Someone I’ve never met going through my old instagram selfies and systematically liking them – creepy. Someone I’ve never met obsessively reading my old fics and liking them – my favorite person of the day. Just MHO.

seeing the same person’s name on a string of kudos for your fics because they’ve obviously read through your back catalogue is one of life’s great joys

xcziel, there’s nothing I like more as a writer than someone who is obviously reading everything.

Well, maybe comments. Yes, on old fic too.

I once (back on lj) had someone comment on every single chapter of a fic I wrote in one evening. It was the most thrilling night of my fanfic career. I didn’t feel creepy in the least.

COMMENT.  I don’t care how old it is or how many chapters a reader comments on.

The only thing that might possibly be more flattering is the “I stayed up all night because I couldn’t stop reading” comment.

Yes, please.

YES ALL OF THIS

all of this

Reblogging because readers somehow still have this idea that too many comments/kudos are seen as creepy or stalkery.
IT’S NOT.
Seriously. Every comment, all of the kudos, they’re greatly, GREATLY appreciated. And knowing that someone liked your work enough to click on your name and go through your other fics and liked those too, even the old stuff you’re kind of self-conscious about, is the greatest feeling a writer can have. So if you like a fic, say something/leave kudos, no matter if it’s the first or fifth fanfic you’ve read in one night from that author.

I LOVE when I get an email where it’s the same name, like a dozen or more times because they went through and read like, /everything I ever wrote/ apparently. It makes me so happy! 😀

Multiple kudos and/or lots of comments are the best thing ever
