Getting ready to post the opening chapter or two of this year’s @mi6-cafe ‘s Occult October Challenge (aka sp00qy fest).  It’s not quite done, but I have enough written ahead that I already have more than enough for a chapter a day through the end of the month and probably three more to write.

As an aside, last year’s sp00qy fic was my first foray into this fandom, so this is also my one-year anniversary, more or less.  It’s been grand!  I’m seriously so grateful to be part of such a welcoming and supporting fandom.  Thank you @mi6-cafe for all you do to keep us engaged.

Few Words Wednesday/WIPWednesday

From my sp00qy fic, now more than 15k words and a bit more than half-done and due in 14 days  (headdesk)

“I’m in,” Q says.  “I have eyes on you.  Go down this hall and take a right when you can.  I saw them enter the third door on the left off that hallway, but there doesn’t seem to be a camera within the room.  I can’t see what you’ll be walking into.”

Bond slinks down the hallway, drawing his gun as he turns the corner.  “I thought you said you couldn’t hack the internal system,” he whispers.

“I said it might be traceable.  It’s a sophisticated system.  I can get in, but it’s complex enough I might not be able to erase all traces of my presence.  If this is all about to go tits up, though, irregularities in their video access will be the least of our worries.”

That’s true.  “I’ll try to make sure this doesn’t go completely to shite.”  He can already hear raised voices.

Then he hears a shot.

“Bond!”

“It wasn’t me.  I’m not even—”

A second shot — silencer activated — sounds as he gets to the door.  Three men came up here.  How many are still alive?

“007—”

“Entering now.”  Q thankfully goes quiet, though Bond can still hear his fingers tapping at the keyboard.

Few Words Wednesday/WIP Wednesday

Here’s a snippet from the prologue for my as-yet-unnamed sp00qy fic.

…Old hearts are patient and selective.

But when they fall, they are utterly lost.

Bond’s heart lashed out after Vesper’s betrayal. Hot with embarrassment and rage, it shredded itself with recriminations of folly until what was left was a calloused leathery thing, all but impossible to pierce.  And so it stayed for years, with only a few shiny spots worn soft by colleagues and friends.   Until Madeleine reminded it of older times, older connections, and found a way in.

Few Words Wednesday/ WIP Wednesday

This is from my current WIP for the @mi6-cafe #occult October challenge.  Because my story takes place over a year, this scene actually occurs on Christmas Eve and isn’t very sp00qy at all.   Bond has just returned from a mission and is at loose ends, and Q has decided against his original plans.

“It’s raining cats and dogs, Q.  Let me drive you home.”

Q hesitates, perhaps torn between letting James know his address and the thought of getting soaked.  “Actually, there’s a pub quiz near my house that I might go to since I’ve begged off Shakespeare.  If you don’t have plans, you’d be welcome to join me.  Though you look a bit posh for the venue.”

“I have a sweater in the car.  It’s not as… festive as yours.”

Q quirks a smile.  “I’ll lend you my scarf.  It’s a tartan with snowmen.”

“That won’t be necessary.”

“It really is.  You’ll feel out of place looking too drab.”

Q’s right as it turns out.  The pub looks to be about 500 years old, but the decorations are bright and garish, and the people moreso.  Q’s sweater is positively sedate compared with the tinsel and flashing lights adorning most of the patrons.  If Bond had worn his blue cashmere without the brash tartan-and-snowman scarf, he would have felt a million years old.

More interesting than all that, though, is the ease with which Q carries himself as he enters to waves as cries of “Tom” and “Thomas my lad” greet him.  A ginger-haired woman in an elf costume calls, “Tom’s on my team!” from behind the bar.  Q weaves his way over, James just behind.

“Thought you weren’t comin’, love,” she says, hoisting herself onto the bar so she can peck him on the cheek.

“Changed my mind.  Lulu, this is James, James, Lulu.  We’re on her team, it would seem.”

“I only called for you.  What’s he got?” James bristles a bit under her scrutiny as Q laughs.

“He’s passing good with geography,” Q sniggers.

“Passing?” James asks incredulously.

“Absolute shite at maths, but you’ll have me for that,” Q continues.

“Passing.  I’ve been to more countries—”

“He’s good with military history, too.  Oh, and posh stuff… tailors and wines and whatnot.”

“Ooh, we always miss those ones,” Lulu cries.  “Alright, then.  He’s on our team.  James, is it?  What’ll ye’ have?  Tom?  Your regular?”

“Ta, Lulu.  Make it two.   James can have the same.”

She nods and heads to the back.

“Passing?” James asks pointedly.

Q snickers like a bloody schoolboy.  “Well, best to surprise them with your brilliance after they’ve underestimated you.”

That’s probably true, actually.  But… “Ordering my drinks for me?”

Q waves a hand.  “You’ll like it.  And I can’t have you embarrassing me with one of your posh martini orders.”

Lulu’s back with two tumblers of amber liquid.  “Drink up lads.  Only not too much: I want to wipe that smug smile off Giles’ face this year.  We’re at table four.”

mi6-cafe:

As we move into the next month, it’s time to get spooky (and sp00qy) here in the Cafe! That’s right—it’s Occult October!

Occult October Challenge

This month, we’re challenging you to make something “occult”—or in other words, something spooky, gothic, suspenseful, supernatural, or magical; horror genre fancreations; or any Halloween-themed fancreations.

00Q, rare pairs, gen–everything is up for grabs. You can be inspired by canon, by artwork, by music, or by anything that grabs you and takes you down the path to Halloween horror or Halloween fun! And don’t forget to rec your favorite occult fancreations as well!

Tag your fancreations and recs with #mi6cafechallenge so we can find and reblog them!

October Recipe Exchange: October 28–November 3

As we transition from summer to fall (or winter to spring if you’re in the southern hemisphere!), let’s gather together to exchange our favorite seasonal, Halloween-related, or Day of the Dead-related recipes!  Recipe exchange week is from October 28 to November 3, so be ready to post all of your favorite October meals and treats!

Spooky Story Readalong: Oct 25 9PM EST; Oct 28 4PM EST

This October, we’re asking you to join us in the MI6Cafe Discord with a spooky or Halloween-related fanfic from Bond fandom!

We have two readalong events this year, one to take the place of the usual Thursday night book club, and another at what is hopefully a time that works better for our friends in Europe.

Suggested word limit is 2k or less, just so we can enjoy as many fics as possible. Feel free to excerpt a passage from a longer fic if you like! Fics should also be rated M or under. Put any recommendations here.

You can share a fanfic you’ve written or a fanfic you’ve read and admired, and in the grand tradition of telling stories around campfires, we’ll all gather around and read the stories aloud together. Lurkers are welcome–come join us for an evening of Bond Halloween fun!

Write/Draw-Ins: October 6 and October 27

Come join us in the Slack on October 6 and October 27 for a day of writing, drawing, brainstorming, and cheerleading. We’ll do sprints and work on our WIPs!

Bond Book Club, Thursdays at 9PM EST

Join us every Thursday at 9PM EST in the MI6 Cafe Discord as we continue reading On Her Majesty’s Secret Service! How will Bond and Tracy escape Blofeld’s pursuit and foil his evil plans?

Writer’s Workshop: Point of View

Our writer’s workshop this month is about exploring point of view! What’s the difference between first person, second person, third person limited, and third person omniscient? And how can you make your story’s point of view pack more punch with your audience? Join @castillon02 and cohosts to find out! Date and Time TBA.

Regular Weekly Events

In addition to Bond Book Club on Thursdays, we also invite you to share an excerpt from your WIP on WIP Wednesday, to come to chat night in the 00Q Slack on Wednesdays (you can message @spiritofcamelot or @castillon02 for an invite!), and to support someone in the fandom on Supportive Sunday

As always, all ships and gen fic are welcome!

“Got the morbs” should be a thing.

Victorian slang is AMAZING, and select phrases really need to make a comeback.

“Bitch the pot” – Pour the tea (HOW RELEVANT IS THIS!?)

“Bang up the elephant” – Absolutely perfect; super stylish

“Well, that’s shot the bale” – Something that has missed the mark entirely

“Church-bell” – A woman prone to gossip

“Chuckaboo” – A dear friend, a bosom chum

“Beer and skittles” – A great time (see also: Irish Gaelic “craic”)

“Butter on bacon” – Something overdone or too extravagant

“Cupid’s kettle drums” – Breasts, particularly large ones

“Gigglemug” – A cheerful smiling face

All of these??? Make me smile??? They’re so weird and wonderful I love them??? Especially bitch the pot because that’s something I could totally hear myself saying…that and chuckaboo

I worked in a Victorian tea house in my youth and I’m telling you, you haven’t lived till you hear a the 98 year old lady (this was some 15 years ago) utter the words “bitch the pot” because it was what they used to say when the tea house first opened and it just sort of stuck through all the generations.

Um…I’m using all of these is my 00q story.
