ofhounds:

vulcan is sixteen light years from earth.
meaning: light from vulcan takes sixteen years to travel the immense distance between the two planets.
meaning: vulcan would still be visible from earth, a faint and distant pinprick of light amongst a sea of others, for sixteen years after its destruction, despite it being gone forever.

Yup.  That realization inspired this.  And others have played with the concept as well.

i want spock to give someone the vulcan salute and have that person misunderstand and give him a jubilous high five and spock just stares at his hand in confusion as an awkward silence ensues

What if that’s part of the basic sexual harassment training Starfleet gives at the academy like “do not highfive the Vulcans. Don’t do it. They look like they want highfives. They do not want highfives.”

I love this

hiraeth

(hɨraɪ̯θ), noun | A Welsh, untranslatable feeling, hiraeth is loosely described as a homesickness for a home you cannot return to anymore or a place, which never even existed. Connotations of sadness, yearning, profound nostalgia, and wistfulness are imbued into the state of hiraeth. Overall this beautiful, but painful longing is a an expression of an empty desire and grief over a past life or place. It is the ultimate signifier of a bond, which has ceased to exist.   (via suckmykirk)
