Off to RL

I have a giggle of girls coming over today for a pool/pizza/sleep over for Miss10′s birthday.  So I have mini-bundts to buy and streamers to hang and balloons to arrange.  Hope to be around tonight…may even try to write something.

Enjoy your day, Beans!

Just the WORST day…

Most recent thing, in the last half hour my walk to the train was so windy and flipped my coat around so much that my pocket must have turned upside down and I lost my train card (with $200 on it) my coffee card (with $50 on it) and my building access card, which is a major pain in the ass to replace and will make Monday morning hell. At least someone was still in the office to give me the email of the person I need to report it to, so I did that. But it really was just the last of a full day of unfortunate miscommunications, misfortunes, and other fuckery.

At least I’m watching The Martian tonight.

GBP: *buys 7 stings of patio lights from neighbor for $20 to replace 10-year-old patio lights that have a section of string that no longer lights*

Me: So you’re going to replace all the old ones with these?

GBP: Yeah.

Me: Are you going to be able to throw the old ones out?

GBP: What do you mean?

Me: (after 19 years of marriage) I mean you have an inherent inability to throw anything away, even if it’s not working.  And these are only partially broken.

GBP: I’m sure you can sneak them out in the middle of the night…

Grandpa is fine

Those of you who were around on Tuesday when I fled the office because my grandfather went to the hospital, and then noticed I was gone much of the week, please know that he’s okay.  They still aren’t sure what the chest pain was about, but it was not a heart attack, and he doesn’t have pneumonia, and he even passed his stress test with flying colors for a 94yo.  He came over last night for our usual pizza and movie with his great granddaughters (and GBP and me).  And we finished the Indiana Jones series.  So now we need to find a new series…he’s caught up on Harry Potter, Marvel, except the more vulgar ones), We might start on LotR, though I’m not sure he has the stamina to watch an entire 3 hour film in one sitting.

We joke that we’re taking care of his pop culture quotient.  He’s always been a big reader, but mostly histories etc.  Now he’s read the entire Harry Potter series, which thrills all his grandkids and great grandkids.

Anyway, it was a scary week as they ran test after test and nothing showed up as the culprit, but we’ll take what we can get.  Thanks again for all your well wishes and support.

On my way home early…

ato-the-bean:

…because my grandfather has been admitted into the ER with chest pains.

Fingers crossed that it’s not another heart attack. We need more time with him.

Thanks to everyone who sent hugs and well wishes.  He is staying overnight in the hospital, but we hope he will be released tomorrow.  The tests so far indicate no heart attack and no pneumonia, but that means we don’t actually know what is causing the pain, so they are doing some more tests.

I’ll probably be in and out the next few days as we (I hope) get him settled at home again.

Again, thanks friends… I saw your messages come in on my phone and they really did help. ( @psychoticpterodactyl16, @seepunkrun, @emilociraptor, @hopeforyouyet, @silfreya, @plaid-queen, @entrenous88, @thatmysticbafflingwonder, @rycolfan)

Personal

I don’t share personal things here often…that’s not what this blog is for.  But I thought I’d share a minor triumph.  I’ve lost 35 lbs since April.  I’m by no means small, but I feel healthier and I look better and my knees don’t hurt.  And I haven’t been on a diet so much as changed the way I eat (timing, pattern, types of food).  I’m rarely hungry (and never for long), I feel satisfied with my meals, and it’s been surprisingly easy.  By the time I turn 50, I’m hoping to be in a healthier place than I’ve been through most of my 40s.

I kept it a secret when I started, because I didn’t want my entire family watching if it didn’t go well.  But now people know (they can’t help but notice, actually), and I still have a ways to go, but I’m feeling surprisingly positive about the whole thing.  I’d planned to shoot for losing another 15 lbs, but I think now I’m more inclined to just eat this way the rest of my life, maybe allowing myself more exceptions once I’ve lost a bit more, and seeing where I naturally level out.

I was spurred by the fact that a colleague of mine retired in December, and then in March was hiking with his family, had a coronary on the trail, and died.  It was so fucking tragic.  My girls are finally old enough to backpack with.  I like being in the wilderness and teaching them the joys of being where there are no roads and spectacular views.  I’m healthy, other than the weight.  And I never wanted t risk doing that to them.

Anyway, not sure I’ll leave this here long, but in a sharing mood as I head out to date night with Geek Boy Professor.  I’m excited about planning our next high-country trip for next summer.
